    Water information and schedules to establish a new lawn:

    You can apply for an exemption from the watering roster if you are installing a new lawn. To obtain Certificate of Exemption from the Water Corporation, please phone the Waterwise Helpline (131 039).

    1 October - 31 March
    (Hot Weather)

    If your exemption is granted during this time, you are able to water for up to 42 days from the day of planting. We recommend you water your new lawn or garden with 10 mm of water a day.

    Frequency: 3 x Daily
    Time: Before 9 am, at 12 noon and at 3 pm

     DAYS 11-20
    Amount: 5 mm

    If your exemption is granted during this time, you are able to water for up to 35 days from the day of planting. We recommend you water your new lawn or garden with 7.5 mm of water a day.

    In order to know how much water your system is applying you need to measure it's output. This is quite simple to do. All you need is an empty ice cream container or similar catch cup placed out on the lawn. Then turn the sprinklers on and time how long it takes to gather 10 mm of water in the bottom of the container. This will give you the correct setting for the duration of watering for that station on your controller. Check different spots to make sure you get an even coverage and that no spot gets less than the minimum.

    Once the lawn has established the watering schedule can follow the guidelines below:

    Recommended lawn irrigation requirements for established lawns

    A table of recommended rates is provided below for different sprinkler types and shows the sprinkler run times you should employ on each of your rostered irrigation days (being 3 days a week for bore water users and 2 days a week for scheme water users). Using this schedule will save water and money and ensure your lawn will always look its best. The schedule is based on lawns established on an improved soil in combination with the use of a premium soil wetting agent and also Biagra water retainer.
